Teeth Grinding & Jaw Clenching

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (bruxism) are increasingly common, and are often linked to stress. Many people do it at night without realising, and only notice the effects: an aching or tight jaw, headaches, disturbed sleep, worn or sensitive teeth, and a jaw muscle that becomes enlarged over time.

How can treatment help?

The masseter muscles on each side of the jaw do most of the work when you clench and grind. A small amount of a prescription-only muscle-relaxing medicine is injected into these muscles to reduce how strongly they contract. This may help to ease jaw tension and reduce the force of clenching and grinding. As the muscle relaxes over the following weeks, many clients also notice a softer, slimmer-looking jawline.

Please note that this is an off-label use of the medicine. Nayema will explain what this means, and whether treatment is suitable for you, at your consultation.

What to expect

  • An in-depth consultation first, covering your symptoms, medical history and whether treatment is right for you
  • The treatment itself takes around 15 minutes, using a very fine needle
  • Any change is usually felt within one to two weeks, and develops gradually
  • Results typically last 3 to 6 months, and vary from person to person

Working alongside your dentist

We recommend that anyone who grinds their teeth also sees their dentist, who can check for wear and damage and advise on a night guard. Treatment with us works alongside dental care, not instead of it.
